The West Virginia Power had their last late-morning game of the season today. The rest of the Pirates' lower minor affiliates play this evening.
West Virginia Power 12, Rome Braves 4 ... (box)
The Power hammered away at the Braves, scoring in every inning after the 1st, doubling up the Braves in hits. Jarek Cunningham and LF Rogelios Noris led the way with 3 hits each. 2B Rome got off to a good start with a solo home run to begin the 2nd inning. The Power came right back in the bottom of the inning, when 1B Aaron Baker walked and scored on RF Jose Hernandez's double off the right field wall. A ground out pushed Hernandez to third base, and he scored on Noris' line drive single inot left field. 3B Elevys Gonzalez added another run with a lead-off homer on the first pitch of the 3rd inning (his 4th of the season). Noris crushed a ball off the top of the left field wall with one out in the 4th inning, cruising into third base for a stand-up triple. He scored moments later on SS Benji Gonzalez's first home run of the season.
Power starter Brett Lorin had allowed that homer in the 2nd, and gave up singles in the 1st and 3rd, plus two walks in the 4th. The Braves got to him in the top of the 5th, though. With two outs, Lorin hit a batter, then gave up a double and a 3-run homer. That brought Rome within one run of the Power, 5-4. But that was all the scoring the Power pitchers intended to let the Braves do. Maurice Bankston relieved Lorin to pitch 2 scoreless innings, allowing only a single in the 7th. Jhonathan Ramos, just promoted from State College, celebrated his return to the Power with two perfect innings, including 3 strikeouts.
The Power added some insurance runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Jarek Cunningham led off with a single, and he advanced to second base on a wild pitch. CF Evan Chambers walked, then when the Braves changed pitchers, Cunningham and Chambers greeted the new hurler by pulling off a double steal. Hernandez lined a single into right field, scoring Cunningham, and C Ramon Cabrera's sacrifice fly brought in Chambers. Noris lined into center field, and when Hernandez tried to make it to third base, the throw in from the outfield got past the Rome third baseman. Hernandez scrambled for the plate, but the third baseman recovered the ball quickly, and Hernandez was out at the plate. Noris was credited with only a single on the play, and the Power had a 7-4 lead.
Three more runs scored in the 6th. Benji Gonzalez singled and stole second base, and Cunningham tripled off the center field wall to bring him in. Chambers walked and also stole second base, then Baker doubled, plating both Cunningham and Chambers. DH Andy Vasquez added a solo home run in the 7th inning. Then the Power loaded the bases in the 8th on a walk to Cunningham, Chambers being hit by a pitch, and a single by Baker. A sacrifice fly by Hernandez brought Cunningham across the plate for the Power's 12th run of the game.
The South Atlantic League announced their post-season All-Star Team today, but no Power players were named to the team.
Bowie Baysox 6, Altoona Curve 2 ... (box)
A 3-run 7th inning by the Baysox put the game out of reach for the Curve, who did not score after the 3rd inning. Curve starter Tony Watson had a rough time in the first two innings. He gave up three hits in those innings, but two of the hits were home runs -- a double and a 2-run homer in the 1st, and a solo shot to lead off the 2nd inning. Watson gave up a walk in both the 2nd and 3rd, and another single in the 3rd, then settled down for the next three innings. He struck out the side in the 4th, and retired the last 10 batters he faced in order.
The Curve responded with one run in the top of the 2nd. 2B Jim Negrych walked, then scored on a double by LF Yung Chi Chen and a throwing error on the Bowie center fielder. SS Jordy Mercer added a run in the 3rd inning when he doubled and then scored on 1B Matt Hague's RBI single.
3B Josh Harrison was the only Curve batter to reach base over the next three innings, when he singled with two outs in the 5th; he also had a single in the 1st. Negrych and RF Jose De Los Santos both singled in the 7th, and Chen singled again in the 9th. But the Curve could not push any of those around to score.
Mike Dubee came on in relief of Watson to begin the 7th. He gave up a double and a walk to put the first two Bowie batters on base. A sacrifice bunt attempt back to the mound turned into a force out at third, thanks to a quick reaction by Dubee. A fielding error by Harrison loaded the bases, than a single brought in the lead runner. Another walk forced in the second run of the inning. Dubee was relieved by Tom Boleska, but Boleska also walked in a run before getting an inning-ending ground out. Baysox ahead, 6-2. The Curve could not get anything going in the 8th, and had only Chen's 2-out single in the 9th, with a total of 4 strikeouts over those two innings.
St. Lucie Mets 4, Bradenton Marauders 3 ..... (box)
This was the completion of the suspended game from two days ago. When we last left our heroes, the Marauders had scored one run in each of three consecutive innings to tie the score at 3-3. C James Skelton, LF Quincy Latimore, and RF Austin McClune each had RBI's in those innings. Starter Matt McSwain had allowed 2 runs in the 1st and one run in the 4th, but he began the bottom of the 6th with two strikeouts. When the game resumed, Craig Hansen replaced McSwain on the mound. He gave up a single, then got a fly out to end the 6th. Both teams went down in order in the 7th, sending the game into extra innings (only 7 scheduled innings in a double-header game.). The Marauders threatened in the top of the 8th, when Picart worked a 2-out walk, and 2B Shelby Ford singled, moving Picart to third. A ground out ended the inning without a score. The bottom of the frame began with a single up the middle for the Mets. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second base and Hansen intentionally walked the next batter. A passed ball moved both runners up one base, and another RBI single brought in the lead runner with the winning run.
Mets 5, Marauders 4 ... (box)
The Marauders fell one run short in the second (regularly scheduled) game also. The Marauders began the game with a run in the top of the 1st on 2B Shelby Ford's walk, a single by CF Starling Marte's single, and a fielding error on C Erik Fryer's grounder. Singles by DH Jordan Newton and Ford brought in another run in the 2nd.
Marauders' starter Tim Alderson retired the Mets in order in the 1st, but gave up a run in the 7th on a double and an RBI single. A walk, a single, and a double brought in 2 runs in the 3rd inning. Alderson gave up a fourth run in the 4th, on a triple and a single, and the Mets had taken a 4-2 lead.
After two quiet innings for both teams, the Marauders put a run onto the board in the 8th with a double and a triple. But the Mets had another triple in the bottom of the inning, and a sacrifice fly scored another run. The Mets loaded the bases after that run came in, on two singles and an error, but reliever Kyle McPherson got a strikeout and a line out to end the inning. The Marauders had one last chance in the top of the 9th. With two outs, Shelby Ford singled, then moved to second base on defensive indifference. Ford scored from second base on RF Robbie Grossman's single. Marte was hit by a pitch, and both Grossman and Marte moved up on base due to a passed ball. But with two runners on base, representing the tying and wining runs, and two outs, a fly out ended the game.
Auburn Doubledays 1, State College Spikes 0 ... (box)
One run by Auburn in the top of the 2nd was all it took to win this pitching duel. A single, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI single given up by Spikes' starter Zac Fuesser in the 2nd inning gave Auburn their lone run. Fuesser pitched 6 innings and allowed only one other hit, a single in the 1st, and then only 2 walks over his next 4 innings. Mitch Fienemann pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit. Justin Ennis pitched a perfect top of the 9th.
The Spikes were held to just two hits -- a single by SS Drew Maggi in the 3rd and a single by 3B Kelson Brown to lead off the 5th. They also had 7 runners reach base on walks, though, so that there were just 3 innings without a Spikes' runner on base. The Spikes had two runners on in the 2nd, when 1B Matt Curry and Brown both walked, and in the 3rd when Maggi singled and CF Mel Rojas walked. In their last chance in the bottom of the 9th, C Matt Skirving and Curry both walked, but again both were left on base.
